Power Division Warns of Costly Electricity, Increased Loadshedding Without Urgent LNG Supply

ISLAMABAD: The Power Division has warned that failure to secure immediate liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies could lead to higher electricity costs and prolonged load-shedding across Pakistan.

In a letter to the Petroleum Division, officials highlighted that electricity demand is rising rapidly due to increasing temperatures, making LNG crucial for power generation. The Power Division has requested urgent arrangements for at least four LNG cargoes to meet the growing demand.

According to sources, the letter emphasized that LNG under long-term agreements with Qatar should be prioritized to ensure timely supply for power plants.

The Power Division cautioned that any delay in LNG availability would force reliance on expensive alternatives such as diesel, significantly increasing the cost of electricity generation. This, in turn, would likely result in higher tariffs for consumers.

Additionally, the letter warned that inadequate LNG supply would exacerbate load-shedding durations, further straining households and businesses already facing power shortages.

Authorities stressed that timely procurement of LNG cargoes is essential to maintain system stability, control generation costs, and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during the peak summer season.
